Pharmaceutical Compounding
When an “off the shelf products” just won’t do!!
We have been compounding at The Wesley Pharmacy since our inception in 1977. Our formulary, range and expertise have grown considerable in that time. In 2009 we prepared over 132 different types of product and made over 15372 compounded items.
Compounding involves the preparation of unique medicines for individual patients. There are several reasons why pharmacists need to compound. These include the need to prepare:
- Specially flavoured medicines for children and adults to improve palatability.
- Colour-free and preservative-free medicines for children and adults to avoid ingredients that could cause allergic reactions.
- Freshly made medicines that have a short shelf-life.
- Medicines of unique strength or concentration.
- Liquid medicines or suppositories in place of tablets to improve ease of ingestion and swallowing.
- Creams and ointments for application to the skin.
- Sterile products such as eye-drops and injections.
- Medicines that have been discontinued or are not manufactured in any suitable form.
Unfortunately legislative constraints prohibit us from advertising the actual capsules, creams, linaments, pastes, paints, gels, elixirs, pessaries, suppositories, injections, nose, ear and eye drops, lotions, solutions, mixtures, mouth washes, inhalations, suspensions, or other products that we compound. In short, if it can be compounded, we can do it.
